The "Sendero de Chile" (Chile´s trail) remains under construction, although it is expected to become one of the world's longest hiking routes, approximately 6,000 km long. At the moment however, it exists only in a few areas, e.g. in Chile 's heartland, east of Talca and Linares. Along the trail you'll find comfortable, as well as charming cottages to stay at. The route at this point, crosses the Rabones Valley and rises up to Los Bellotos Nature Reserve, bypasses the Andean Mountain Range and descends into the Melado River Valley. You may rent horses from one of the local cowboys or book a guided tour. However, make sure you book cottages way in advance!
Starting point:
Rari or Rabones, approach via Talca - Linares
Getting there:
Daily public transportation runs from Talca to Linares. Upon arrival, meet up with one of the arrieros, or with the Rabones cottage owner.
Day 1: Rari - Refugio Rabones, Riding time ca. 3 - 4 h
Today's journey will lead us through partly difficult ground, crossing pine and eucalyptus plantations. After the first half of this trekking experience, you'll be challenged by a downhill ride, which will require you to walk by your horse. If you're exposed to rain, the surface may get too slippery to continue, however let your guide decide. The Refugio Rabones mountain cottage provides great food and lodging. This area may be easily accessed by car, thus you may want to start the cottage tour at this point.
Day 2: Refugio Rabones - Refugio Melado, Riding time ca. 7 h
Today's trek is rather exhausting. Departing from the Rabones Valley, ride to the small community Roblería on the Ancoa River shoreline. Horse trekking on a scarcely used road ascending the Melado Refugio (Lodge). The upper area of the road is known by its dense forestation of southern beech groves, and provides an extraordinary view of the valley's watercourses. Melado Lodge offers unexpected comfort after a long days trek! Please note you'll only have power from 8 pm to 12 pm, so bring a flashlight! The area around the Lodge is nice enough to spend an extra day exploring on foot or on horse back the breathtaking Belloto Reserve.
Day 3: Refugio Melado - Lamalodge, Riding time ca. 7 h
This trail crosses over a 2000 m high mountain pass. If you don't feel comfortable, get off your horse particularly at the downward slope. Keep a distance from people in front of you, at least one horse's length. Keep watch of your horse's legs to prevent them from getting stuck amongst rocks or from stumbling over branches. At the Melado River pass, you will go by a passport control booth, keep your passport handy. Depending on the season, the river may be passable or you might have to make a detour of approximately one hour and a half to cross over a bridge. On the river coastline, intact and safe inviting sandy areas are ideal bathing spots.
The small Lamalodge in the middle of the woods offers accommodation, a hot shower and the use of a small kitchenette. We recommend ordering a meal from the family living next to the lodge! Meet them around an open fire or at their kitchen for an atypical experience. The cottage is equipped with a radio-transmitting device. If you want to book a transfer to Talca for the following day, please make sure you organize it in advance.
Day 4: Lamalodge - Ruta Paso Pehuenche, Riding time ca. 5 h
The Lamalodge is the starting point for trekking tours to the San Pedro loop trail. If your tour ends today, you might be interested in continuing your ride for another hour or so going uphill, passing through stunning beech groves, and later descending into the Maule River. During the fall season, multi-colored leaves brightly shine in various shades of red and yellow. After over a 5-hour journey, you'll reach the Curillinque Bridge. You may take public transport back to Talca or if you prefer order a taxi (before you begin the tour) to pick you up.
