This trekking tour through a uniquely unharmed landscape combines stunning natural beauty and mountain farmer hospitality. Establish closer ties with local farmers by participating in every day country life as well as in their daily chores, both on the field and with farm animals. The landscape at the foothills of the San Pedro volcano challenges Chile 's most popular tourist attractions, an area entirely unscathed. At this point, Andean grasslands will surround you; narrow valleys, crystal clear rivers and from time to time you might encounter a majestic condor circling high above the snow-capped peaks.
Day 1: Lamalodge - Casa Piedra, Riding time ca. 5 1/2 h
The first day will begin by riding along a scarcely used path on easy terrain. From time to time, trotting or galloping on sandy ground makes good sense. If we encounter rain, crossing creeks might become difficult. There is a nice campground next to Casa Piedra (Stone House). The local family manufactures saddles and bridles, with beautifully hand-woven saddlebags.
Day 2: Casa Piedra - Mallín Alto, Riding time ca. 3 1/2 h
The ride will remain easy up to Puente Piedra Bridge . On route, we must make a stop for a horse disease prevention check-up by the Livestock and Agriculture Authority (SAG). After crossing a couple of creeks, we arrive at the Southern tip of the valley joined by Rio de las Puentes. Puelche Indians transported obsidian to their sacred land Calabozo from this location.
At a small police post, passport control takes place as we approach the Argentinean border. On this journey, you will experience observing one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country. At Mallín Alto, you'll arrive at a pleasant campsite with a view of the volcano in the backdrop; take a "natural shower" in a little creek nearby. The afternoon calls for a short on foot trekking excursion in the surrounding area.
Day 3: Mallín Alto - Estero San Pedro, Riding time ca. 6 h
Today's trek will cross several creeks, some of them over a meter deep. On our way, we'll meet some mountain farmers kiosks - a marvelous occasion to enjoy a mate tea with the cowboys. Our campsite is at the Estero San Pedro Valley . If you were not tired, a nice hike to the waterfall would be great.
Day 4: Estero San Pedro - La Huerta, Riding time ca. 5 h
This journey will lead through beautiful forests of knotty Oak trees. Some galloping on green pastures is called for in this area. In the afternoon, we'll cross the Livestock and Agriculture service again, and reach La Huerta, a small community of only a few houses, surrounded by poplars.
Day 5: La Huerta - Lamalodge, Riding time ca. 3,5 h
Our last adventurous horse trekking day leads us back to the Lamalodge. If you do not have your own vehicle, previously organize a transfer back to Talca. However, you may want to plan for another option such as riding to the Maule River, where you can take a public transportation once a day during the morning hours.
