"...what knowledge might you have of the mountain range
you were born so far away,
you must know the boulders
crowning snowdrifts,
you must travel silently,
cutting across the pinnacles of silence..."
Patricio Manns (TN: - free translation of its original language Spanish)
The Chilean Andean mountain range, holds various communities made up of "arrieros". The name derives from "arreos" (herding livestock). These communities represent a unique rural lifestyle, a micro-culture. The arrieros have developed unique cultural essentials, an identity, distinctive from other peoples in Chile. |
