Various myths and legends exist amongst these communities. One especially well known is that of the "culebrón", a thick-legged snake, cat headed and wings that lives in the high mountain caves.
The culebrón only abandons its cave for a few moments during the day; it captures sunrays from treetops. At night, they hide in their caves again, provided with night-vision cat-eyes.
This myth probably came about to keep children and intruders away from caves, were arrieros store wine and food.
