The Chilean Government supports the idea of a controlled tourism industry which could contribute to preserving life-styles and traditions. This economic activity not only improves local income for families mostly in the low-income bracket. They also receive recognition and respect for their way of life. This is especially important to rural youth; tourism development is another option to residents frequently tempted to migrate to larger cities. "Meet the people" is inspired on this principle: seek and find the link between Chilean inhabitants and the interested traveler.
Beyond profitable endeavors, "Meet the people" expects to facilitate an encounter between the traveling visitor and the everyday local dweller whilst visiting outstanding landscapes. This program provides local tour guides; supports local suppliers, provides tourism-training programs, signage for trekking routes and conveys environmental information, such as route maps; and encourages visiting forgotten areas of traditional Chile. |
