The prohibition to entering Argentinean herds began in the 80's, and so did animal smuggling. Smuggling requires avoiding forceful police surveillance; many arrieros have lost their lives to smuggling. In spite of this and faced with no other source of income, they continue in this dangerous activity.
An arriero narrates his story: "You ride slowly for 5 hours, leaving at daybreak from La Huerta, arriving at El Palenque valley. You wait for nightfall, and take the route towards Cajon de Sazo, until sunrise you must stay, wait and remain hidden in caves all day, at night, you begin your journey again. Riding towards Cajon Valdés, by sunrise, you're in Argentina."
