Often, arrieros own cheap, although enormous, extensions of land, these are generally not good for agriculture, submerged in snow for most part of the winter. These areas are mostly used for animal grazing, their main economic activity in the central region.
The process is called "veranadas" and consists in caring for goats, cattle, sheep, horses and mules on mountain planes during springtime, summer and fall for other owners. Throughout the period, herd grazing is shifted from one valley to another.
The arrieros will organize veranadas although temporary groups are made up without family links. At the veranadas, arrieros take both their animals as well as other people's animals to graze.
